Watching any sporting event becomes even more interesting when you can follow some of the games withing the game. Among the pairs of vehicles at Barrett-Jackson this past week, there was an interesting grouping that pit Chevy, Ford and MOPAR fans against each other for bragging rights. Two Z/28s, two Boss Mustangs, and two ‘Cudas went at it head-to-head in the bidding wars, resurrecting the heady days of Trans-Am racing from the late ’60s and early ’70s. In all fairness, this wasn’t a fair fight. The Z/28s were great and managed to bring $240,000. The Boss Mustangs, however, were spectacular, and especially with the Boss 9, Ford had an unfair advantage. That pair went for $530,000. So the MOPAR faithful had a tough act to follow.
What they brought to the block was pretty impressive, a rare pair of 1970 Plymouth ‘Cudas. The Sassy Grass six-pack Shaker ‘Cuda (Lot # 1345) had the only documented chartreuse strobe stripe along with a 440cid/390hp six-pack V8 engine covered by a factory Shaker hood. Its partner was a 1970 Panther Pink ‘Cuda (Lot # 1345.1) with a super-rare pink strobe stripe and a 340cid V8 engine. It was one of the most heavily optioned ‘70 ‘Cudas ever built. While they were both beautiful cars, only Hemis could be expected to bring the same kind of numbers as that Boss pair. The gavel fell after a high bid of $210,000.
