Next MINI engines to be built by BMW and Peugeot
BMW has announced a partnership with French automaker Peugeot to produce a line of four-cylinder engines that will power the redesigned 2008 MINI as well as future Peugeot and Citroen vehicles. Engine parts will be made at Peugeot’s Douvrin plant in France while the powerplants will be assembled at separate facilities located near each car company’s car manufacturing plants. Currently the MINI gets its gasoline engines from a BMW-DaimlerChrysler plant in Brazil and its diesels are supplied by Toyota from Japan. The specs for the new engines have not yet been released and no word has surfaced on whether a diesel engine will be offered in North America, although we think a sporty, well-handling MINI powered by a diesel would go a long away in creating a less truck-biased image of diesels here in the U.S. The diesel V-dubs out there can only do so much.
